Car accidents are merciless, but people are full of compassion; helping others brings genuine warmth.

On February 3, 2016, Huo Xiyu, a resident of Luannan County, held a banner of honor and, accompanied by his parents, visited the office of Hebei Donghai Special Steel Group Co., Ltd. to meet with and express his gratitude to Wang Junchao, a worker at the company’s No. 2 Rolling Mill.

Around 9 p.m. on January 5, Huo Xiyu, in a fit of anger with his family, drove away from home. While traveling along the Duhao Tuo section of the Changda Road in Luannan County, he lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a large tree by the roadside and overturned into a ditch alongside the road. Wang Junchao, who was driving home at the time, noticed an overturned car in the ditch. He immediately pulled over, found Huo Xiyu unconscious inside, and promptly called both 110 and 120. He also used Huo Xiyu’s cell phone to contact his family. Upon the arrival of the ambulance, Wang accompanied them to Luannan County Hospital, assisting with the necessary procedures until Huo Xiyu’s relatives arrived, after which he quietly departed.

Following diagnosis, Huo Xiyu was found to have a cerebral hemorrhage, fractures of five ribs, a fractured clavicle, and a fractured lumbar vertebra. He was in a deep coma, with injuries of extreme severity. The hospital immediately performed surgery. Thanks to prompt emergency treatment, Huo Xiyu’s life was saved.

Today, Huo Xiyu has recovered and been discharged from the hospital. Yet he has not forgotten the lifesaver who extended a helping hand in his hour of need, pulling him back from the brink of death.

Huo Xiyu’s father, gripping Wang Junchao’s hand through tears, said, “If it weren’t for you, my son would have been dead long ago. It was the depths of winter—without someone to step in, he would have either bled to death or frozen to death. You gave my son a second chance at life; our whole family is deeply grateful to you!” The old man bowed three times in quick succession, then turned to all of us and added, “What a good person you are—there are far too few like you in today’s society…”

Huoxiyu pledged to learn from Wang Junchao, passing on this spirit of compassion to help even more people in need. Though car accidents are merciless, humanity remains kind; acts of kindness reveal true sincerity. The two young men embraced tightly, forging a lifelong friendship from that moment onward.

The company and the Second Steel Rolling Plant wholeheartedly commended Wang Junchao for his selfless spirit of saving lives and helping the injured, as well as his courageous and righteous actions, awarding him a reward of 500 yuan each and calling on all cadres and employees to learn from him.
