On February 8, 2017, semi-trailer owner Zhang Baosheng presented a banner to the Administrative General Department of Hebei Donghai Special Steel Group Co., Ltd., expressing his gratitude to Mao Ruiling, an employee of the Quality and Measurement Department, for saving his life.
Around 11 p.m. on February 3, Master Zhang drove to the Donghai Special Steel material yard to deliver coke as usual. While unloading, he was accidentally buried under a cascade of falling coke, with only his head exposed. The noise at the yard and the late hour—when few people were around—meant his cries for help went unnoticed. The dry quenching process produced thick, highly irritating smoke; if trapped for too long, the situation could have led to severe suffocation, making it extremely dangerous. Just as Master Zhang was losing hope, Mao Ruiling, a sampling worker from the company’s Quality Control Department, noticed that after half an hour the truck still hadn’t finished unloading. Sensing something was amiss, she went to check and discovered Master Zhang buried beneath the pile. She immediately called over other drivers working at the yard, and together they pooled their strength and effort to pull him free. Once rescued, Master Zhang grasped Mao Ruiling’s hand, deeply moved and overflowing with gratitude, offering to pay her handsomely in return for saving his life. Mao Ruiling politely declined, saying, “As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters. It’s what any of us would have done.” Her warm smile and simple words perfectly embodied the distinctive warmth, kindness, and sincerity characteristic of the Donghai Steel team.
To this day, Master Zhang still feels a lingering sense of fear and can scarcely put into words his profound gratitude toward Mao Ruiling, repeatedly saying, “I’m truly so grateful to her—without her, I really don’t know what would have become of me. Thank you…”
